  • What are your qualifications?
I have a Professional Doctorate in Health (DHealth) from the University of Bath, an Honours Master's Degree in Psychotherapy Studies from Sheffield University and a BSc. Degree (First Class Honours) in Counselling and Psychotherapy from Middlesex University.
  • Are you affiliated with any professional psychotherapy bodies?
I am a Fully Accredited Member of the Irish Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP) and I abide by their code of ethics.
  • Do you offer online and face-to-face therapy services?
Yes, I provide online services via Zoom or in-person services from my office in Tramore, Co. Waterford.
  • How many therapy sessions will I need?
There are no particular guidelines as to how many therapy sessions someone needs to attend before they find therapy beneficial as each person is unique and it can depend on the reason why someone is seeking counselling in the first place. Ideally, I would see someone for a minimum of 6 sessions before a mutual review and discussion on the need to proceed, or not, as the case may be. Research shows that 6-to-8 therapy sessions are an optimum number for therapy to be of some benefit.
  • How much does it cost?
A therapy session costs €90. Sessions are pre-paid in advance. Unfortunately, I'm unable to offer any concessions on my service fees. There is a discount if one pre-pays for a bundle of six sessions. Receipts are provided upon request.
  • What is your cancellation policy?
48-Hour Cancellation Policy As I operate a private practice and am self-employed, please understand that I need to operate a cancellation policy. Of course, sometimes sudden emergencies happen that may make it necessary for you to cancel your appointment at very short notice, or fail to attend and are unable to provide notification. In general, however, the following cancellation policy applies: cancellations made up to 48 hours before a scheduled appointment (via email to donagh@waterfordcounselling or WhatsApp to 087 7507313) will not incur a charge and I will contact you with rescheduling options. Cancellations made 48 hours or less before a scheduled appointment will be subject to a charge of €50.
  • Is counselling covered by private health insurance?
If you have private health insurance, you should enquire directly with your individual health insurance provider to check if they offer any coverage for the particular plan you're on. Income tax relief on counselling and psychotherapy fees of up to 20% annually can be available to individuals, including PAYE employees, the self-employed and those with other sources of taxable income. Receipts are available upon request.
  • Can I be sure it is confidential?
Counselling and psychotherapy is confidential within the law. This means that everything spoken about in the therapy is private except where I may have reason to believe that the person is a serious risk to themselves or others, or if I feel that a child is in clear and present danger. In either of these cases, I would discuss my concerns with the person firstly in an effort to move the matter forward by mutual agreement. I outline all of this during the first session.
  • Is online therapy as effective as face-to-face therapy?
This scientific critical review of the literature concluded that "a growing body of knowledge to date is positive in showing that online counselling can have a similar impact and is capable of replicating the facilitative conditions as face‐to‐face encounters".
  • What age group of people do you work with?
I work with adults and teens (13+). Parental consent is required for minors under the age of 18. This would involve a parent signing a consent form before the first session granting permission for me to provide talk therapy services to their child.
  • Do you provide couples counselling services?
I don't provide couples counselling services. I exclusively work with individuals on a one-to-one basis.
